A fine antique chromolithograph menu creeated for the Coronation Banquet of Tsar Nicholas II on May 14th 1896 after a design by Victor Vasnetsov (1848-1926); printed in Moscow, by A. A. Levenson, 1896.
This large and decorative menu for the first day of the coronation festivities was designed by the celebrated Russian artist Victor Vasnetsov in the Old-Russian style. The artist successfully incorporates elements of traditional mediaeval ornaments, as well as Imperial Russian symbols and scenes from illuminated manuscripts. In addition to listing the dishes served at the banquet, this menu includes the text of the official greeting traditionally used to welcome a new Tsar of All Russia on the day of his coronation. One of the most elaborate and festive menus of all coronations, it was given to all guests invited to the Granovitaia Palata at the Kremlin on May 14, 1896. Rolled and tied with a gold tassel, the menu was placed at each table setting.
