(The Battle of Tashkessen is a battle during the Russo-Turkish War, which took place near the village of Tashkessen (modern Sarantsi, Bulgaria) on December 19 (31), 1877.

The battle was fought in mountainous terrain, in the winter, knee-deep and higher in the snow, in the twilight of a short winter day and at night, showing the high training of guards and army officers and lower ranks of the Armed Forces of the Russian Empire. This battle completed the transition of the Western detachment of the Russian army through the Balkans, opened the way to southern Bulgaria and allowed to occupy Sofia on December 23, 1877 (January 4, 1878).)

NNO surmounted by a crown: this is the monogram of Prince Nicholas Nikolaevich Obolensky, Imperial Russian Commander of Preobrazhensky Regiment (1.11.1876 -26.02.1887).
