Bibelot is a late nineteenth century word derived from the French word bel ‘beautiful’, meaning a small item of beauty, curiosity or interest. The word ephemera is derived from the sixteenth century Greek word ephmera meaning a printed or hand written paper not meant to be retained for a long period of time.
Fine antique signed letter in French from Count Sergei Semionovich Uvarov (1786-1855), influential statesman under Tsar Nicholas I, accompanied by an original engraving of the Count.
"Mr. Ambassador,
I received, on the banks of the Volga, 2,000 versts from St. Petersburg, the letter you honored me with, dated July 24th. I am deeply touched by the mark of kindness the King has deigned to bestow upon me; and in order to express this in some modest way to the King has done me the honour of devoting his attention - which I hope will prove beneficial. Upon returning to St Petersburg I shall hasten to apply my utmost care to the orders of Richelieu and his Benevolent Excellency.
Please accept, Mr. Ambassador, the assurance of the high consideration with which I have the honour to be,
Mr. Ambassador,
Your very humble and very obedient servant,
Uvarov
July 27, 1827
Minister, President of the Academy of History"
