We believe in offering clients items that are unique and rare for aficionados of the antique and collector's world. Bibelot is a late nineteenth century word derived from the French word bel ‘beautiful’, meaning a small item of beauty, curiosity or interest. The word ephemera is derived from the sixteenth century Greek word ephmera meaning a printed or hand written paper not meant to be retained for a long period of time.

Fine antique signed letter from Victorian missionary to Africa Robert Moffat (1795-1883), dated 9th March 1840, written during his 1839-1843 visit to England, sent within London to Rev John Arundel, who served as the Home Secretary of the London Missionary Service until 1845. He writes of his punishing schedule of lectures and prayer meetings and refers too his forthcoming publication, a translation of the New Testament into Sechwana. He founded the Mission Stations at Lattakoo, and later Kuruman. He was the father in law to David Livingstone.

"6 Walworth Terrace

March 9th

My dear Sir,

It is near late and I must rise here early but I find I must write a line or two just to ask the question if you are really serious in expecting me to the list of meetings and services you forwarded. However that may be, I assure you I have no intention of doing so for a very good reason, and that is The House is unprovided. As I stated I have no objection to a Sabbath evening and another in the course of the week. However there is little prospect of attending if my cough does not improve! My signature must acquire what hard work I had to finish last Sabbath’s sermon. I leave this early to make sure of the train to Newport but the printing now stands & shall be thrown back nearly two days if I were to attend the meetings referred to & other which will follow. The printing will not be finished before July next.

A question if I can leave London till that work be finished. I shall attend to Bishopsgate Church in the evening such to be at Streatham in the morning, avoiding any other question if I should feel obliged.

Wish for Mr Lewis of the same, that he may feel no disappointment.

Yours in haste

Very truly

Robert Moffat

If I can properly get time to call at the Mission House on my return I shall do so. — RM
