Rare embossed Menu in French for a Dinner for the 'Union des Yachtsmen de Cannes' held at the Cercle Nautique in Cannes 17th March 1890, following the Regatta earlier in the day. A star studded guest list of international yachtsmen attended, including the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, who gave a speech at the event. It is accompanied by a signed letter on embossed stationery from the Marquis de Rochechouart, President of the 'Comité des Régates de Cannes', asking for a donation for the Club.

The menu and letter are mounted onto the original album page with newspaper cuttings in English and French describing the events in detail. Mr Richard Winslow has also annoated the reverse detailing the guests on board the yacht, 'White Lady', owned by Mr Goelett following the Grand Review of Yachts in Cannes on March 17th 1890..

"Cannes 18 January 1890

Madam,

With the racing season nearing, I come to ask you for a donation which will contribute to the ever growing success of yachting in Cannes.

You know how important this sport has become over the past few years and what efforts have been made to ensure that Cannes becomes the centre for France.

Certain of your interest, please accept Madam the assurances of my highest consideration.

The President

Marquis de Rochechouart"

From the collection of Richard and Mary Winslow, English/American aristocrats who owned  the Villa Winslow in Cannes during the 1890s and were friends with aristocrats and royals from all over the world. Mary was a great beauty and had by family traditon once been a mistress of the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII.

The Société des Régates de Cannes was founded in 1860, by Léopold Bucquet and Eugène Tripet-Skripitzine who was French Consul in Moscow. Lord Brougham was the Honorary President.

A few years later, the Duc de Vallombrosa motivated the Société des Régates de Cannes to buy land along the sea shore of La Croisette and build Cercle Nautique which was inaugurated in 1864.

The luxuous rooms fascinated people and the Regattas were sponsored by people such as the Duc de Vallombrosa, Duc de Brabant, future King Léopold II of Belgium, Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, Grand Duke of Mecklemburg-Schwerin etc.

The Société des Régates de Cannes separated in 1893. The 'Union des Yachtsmen des Cannes', was managed by the Marquis de la Rochechouart and 'Société des Régates Cannes', was managed by M. Tajasque.

The word "Regatta", of Italian origin, refers to boat races that had been going on for centuries in Venice, every year at Pentecost.
