Fine antique signed letter in French from Jean-Baptiste Syvere Gay Vicomte de Martignac (1778-1832), to M. Allon, engineer of Moines (Sarthe). Written just days after the death of King Louis XVIII (16th September 1824), the letter refers to the "painful and distressing" circumstances of the moment, explaining the author's delay in replying. Martignac was a leafing Restoration-period statesman, twice Minister of the Interior and later President of the Council under Charles X. He discusses administrative matters concerning the approval of industrial works, including the Anzin forges, and notes his intention to raise the subject with the Minister of the interior and Louis-Antoine Becquey, Director General of Bridges, Roads and Mines.
