The word ephemera is derived from the sixteenth century Greek word ephmera meaning a printed or hand written paper not meant to be retained for a long period of time.
Fine antique menu embossed with the ensigns of SY White Lady a steam yacht originally built as Mira in 1883 by Ramage & Ferguson of Leith and was renamed White Lady by one of the Gilded Age's wealthiest yachtsmen Ogden Goelet (1851-1897), a wealthy New York financier when he purchased it. It was considered one of the most luxurious private yachts of the era. After his death the yacht was sold to the Duke of Manchester and Lillie Langtry. The menu is from the time of the Cannes Regatta and is beautifully embossed and handwritten in French. The Prince of Wales later King Edward VII yacht Britannia won the race on 13th March 1891 and later in the afternoon following the race the Prince of Wales along with the Winslows and other members of the aristocracy went on board White Ladye and this is the menu from that occasion. The Prince celebrated the evening with Richard Winslow at Villa Winslow. It is accompanied by Goelet's calling card annotated in pencil by him as well as newspaper cuttings in French and in English detailing the event.
From the collection of Richard Winslow (1848-1896), born in Chicago to Hezekiah and Helen nee Clarke and Mary Aphia Winslow nee Hurlings Denison (1861-1933), she was born in Pennsylvania to Charles a lawyer and member of the 38th Congress of the USA, her mother was Mary Elizabeth Hulings. They married on the Isle of Wight in 1883 and they had two children that died in infancy. They were wealthy Americans who owned the magnificent Villa Winslow in Cannes during the 1890s as well as a yacht named "Kitty", and were friends with aristocrats and royals from all over the world. Mary was a great beauty and had by family tradition once been a mistress of the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII.
