Fine antique imperial Russian albumen photo showing the furnished interior of The Chinese Drawing Room in the Catherine Palace at Tsarskoe Selo, showing the interior furnishings prior to the revolution, elaborately decorated in the Chinoiserie style with lacquered wall panels inset with oriental scenes, carved door surrounds, and geometric parquet floor. The space is furnished as an intimate salon with upholstered divans, tables, bentwood chairs and decorative screens, lit by ornate electric chandeliers with globe shades and a large portrait of Tsar Nicholas I. The relaxed atmosphere of the room suggests it could be part of the private or semi-private apartments of Tsar Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra. A photograph of the other side of the room was produced by Andre Andreevich Zeest in June-August 1917 as part of the Commission of the Provisional Government. The room was deliberately destroyed by the Germans in World War II and has subsequently been restored with China providing new lacquered panels.
