Fine antique signed letter from Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna (1882-1960), dated 9 February 27 July 1929, addressed to her beloved former tutor Ferdinand Thormeyer (1858-1944), known as Siocha, discussing her routine. It is written on mourning stationery as she is still in mourning for her mother the Dowager Empress Marie who passed away 13th October 1928.

This interesting letter has Olga lamenting the cancelation of Siocha coming to see her due to the freezing winter conditions "We are on the Northern Island - at last its a winter like we used to have, with lots of snow, but its been far too cold...houses here are not built to resist extreme cold. At home, its warm, but when you wake up in the morning its 5 degrees in the bedroom! So, without wasting time, we light a small kerosene stove - and within 4 minutes its warm. This is considered luxury, because the Danes are very economical - only a few of them live like us...Yes, Siocha, your instinct was wise - not wanting to come here earlier. This winter was something frightening. Even now the sea is frozen - and an enormous fleet of steamships are stuck in the ice. We see them, but the poor passengers can hardly get ashore - because "here and there" there are cracks. They finally had to use a cutter from Helsingor (one of the old ones) - because the Copenhagen ferry was booked by ice. There's no "coal and wood",, and even the cows give less milk - because there's nothing left to feed them...I really want to see your dear face...But I am old and sensible, and I don't want you tp perish from the cold before getting here...Our W.C. is inside but for fear it might freeze and crack - we put a small kerosene lamp in there that burns even lower than at your place. I'm not complaining - but now I'm freer (probably referring to the death of her mother) -my drawing and painting are starting again. Still the same chaos in life - isn't it? The children make such a racket constantly in the little house - we hope that won't get on your nerves! They finish lessons around 3.30. Your spoke of your cooking...Russian style...Ghouri eats bread, fruit (bananas), dried fruit (apricots), all kinds of cream; here we make milk, coffee - and black beer... Russian cooking doesn't tempt him...In a few minutes we are going to church...When you have kittens - your Siamese cat will have a family - can I have one? No, that would delay you..." She ends "I kiss you - eight times...From my heart, Olga"
