Bibelot is a late nineteenth century word derived from the French word bel ‘beautiful’, meaning a small item of beauty, curiosity or interest. The word ephemera is derived from the sixteenth century Greek word ephmera meaning a printed or hand written paper not meant to be retained for a long period of time.
Fine antique set of six small wine glasses accompanied by the original decanter and stopper each engraved with a lion rampant surmounting a dukes coronet, within a banner bearing the motto ‘HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE’ surmounted by the royal crown, the body of each glass and decanter further engraved with stars. This suite of engraved glass belonged to Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn (1850-1942) from Bagshot Park, Surrey. He was Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s seventh child and third son. Prince Arthur married Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia in 1879. They had three children, including Princess Patricia, who later became Lady Patricia Ramsay. The suite of glass has passed through the family via Lady Ramsay, granddaughter of Queen Victoria, by descent. There are no chips or cracks and rings like a bell
