The word ephemera is derived from the sixteenth century Greek word ephmera meaning a printed or hand written paper not meant to be retained for a long period of time.
Fine antique signed letter accompanied by its original envelope posted to the Australian Mission by the Duke of York, later King George V dated Marlborough House 26th February 1893, addressed to Lieutenant Arthur Lowry on HMS Curacao Australian Mission, shortly before his marriage to Princess Mary of Teck. In the letter he in an informal tone, discussing naval life, postings to the Pacific and mutual acquaintances such as Lord Charles Bereford;s flag, Stokes Condor etc. He also reports on political affairs at home, noting excitement over the Home Rule Bill, and describes his own plans for the Mediterranean with his mother and sister. He continues with his characteristic references to his love of sport and shooting - detailing outings in Norfolk and Sandringham. Accompanied by its original envelop posted by the Prince and signed with 'G' in the lower left hand corner. Lieutenant Arthur Cole Lowry AM RM (1864-1900), he entered the Navy as a cadet in the 18970's and trained on HMS Britannia alongside Prince George. He rose through the naval ranks serving on HMS Duke, HMS Karrakatta and then HMS Curacoa. In 1900 he was serving on HMS Charkich, and performed a gallant rescue during a boat accident and died, for which he was posthumously awarded the Albert Medal.
