Fine antique pair of large format royal presentation photographs signed 'Edward HMS Britannia", in ink by Prince Edward Duke of Clarence (1864-1892), the other signed "George" and dated "25th July 1879", later King George V (1865-1936), signed whilst on board HMS Britannia, mounted and housed in their original gilt wooden frame. Both photographs show the young princes dressed in cadet naval uniform. Prince Edward was 15 and Prince George 14 and spent five years on HMS Britannia. It was on 11th June 1881 at 4am whilst on board the ship that they both sighted a ghostly ship identified at the Flying Dutchman - thirteen crew members also saw the spectral visit. Provenance: private collection from an English family who was at Dartmouth College at the same time as the princes.
