Bibelot is a late nineteenth century word derived from the French word bel ‘beautiful’, meaning a small item of beauty, curiosity or interest. The word ephemera is derived from the sixteenth century Greek word ephmera meaning a printed or hand written paper not meant to be retained for a long period of time.
Fine antique and rare gilt metal medal/badge with suspension ring in anticipation of the restoration of the monarch to England following the Civil War. This particular medal/badge is described in 'Medallic Illustrations of the history of Great Britain and Irelands', volume one, page 444, printed 1885 by order of the British Museum. The bust shows King Charles II, crowned with long flowing hair with the reverse having the royal shield within the Garter above the crown between C.R. It is thought that this may have been worn by a woman connected to the Court as the face of the badge is so good whilst the reverse is slightly more worn. It was not safe to wear these badges un-covered as people wore these as secret signs of loyalty to the monarchy. in the final image is a more detailed description. From the collection of Dr Loveday of Banbury.
