Fine antique German propaganda First World War bronze medal commemorating the sinking of the Cunard liner RMS Lusitania by a German U-boat on 7th May 1915. The medal says 5th May not 7th May but this was Karl Goetz mistake. The obverse depicts the ship foundering in heavy seas with German inscription recording the event. The reverse shows civilians queuing for tickets beneath a skeletal figure in a satirical condemnation of British shipping practices implying that the civilians were knowingly sent to their deaths by the ship carrying munitions and sailing through a war zone. Designed by Karl Goetz and issued to show the British company and government as being culpable in the disaster.
