The word ephemera is derived from the sixteenth century Greek word ephmera meaning a printed or hand written paper not meant to be retained for a long period of time.
Fine antique 17th century French notarial marriage contract dated 1660, handwritten in old French across eight sewn folios and drawn up before a royal notary. The document sets out the matrimonial agreements, dowry provisions, community of goods, inheritance arrangements, and mutual obligations of the spouses. It is signed by numerous family members and witnesses including members of the Du Fayot and Marault families and associated relations from a minor noble family. The groom is from the Du Fayot family and the bride from the Merault family, both appear with the consent and presence of their parents and close relatives. It establishes the financial and legal arrangements between the two families. The bride brings a dowry consisting of a sum of money and moveable goods which is acknowledged as received and accepted. The wife's interests are protected in the event of widowhood, including the return of the dowry. The principal families signatures are that of Du Fayot and Merault but also Goury, Charpentier, Bordeaux, Lalemant, Guerin, Desvignes and Pelomagnan
