An exceptionally fine antique Imperial Russian chromolithographed menu for the Coronation Day banquet of Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna, held in the Alexander Hall of the Grand Kremlin Palace,  Moscow dated 26th May 1896.

Designed by the Russian artist Apollinary Mikhailovich Vasnetsov (1856-1933) and printed by the A.A. Levenson Partnership, Moscow, the large oblong menu is richly printed in colours with extensive gold and silver highlights. 

The elaborate composition incorporates the crowned conjoined Imperial monograms of Nicholas II and Alexandra, Imperial standards, views of the Moscow Kremlin and other historic Russian cityscapes, and, at right, the Romanov heraldic griffin amongst oak foliage. Below is a traditional presentation of bread and salt with Russian vessels, evoking the ancient ceremonies of greeting and allegiance. Vasnetsov’s printed signature appears beneath the central design and the Levenson imprint at lower right. Contemporary descriptions identify the views as Moscow, Kiev and Nizhny Novgorod. 

The Russian heading “Обѣдъ” means Dinner/Banquet, followed by a particularly grand menu including Russian soup and pirozhki, Gatchina trout, wild goat, chicken fillets with truffles, cold lobster, roast duck, salad, artichokes with mushrooms, hot sweet, ice cream and dessert.
