Fine antique original Imperial Russian chromolithographed supper menu, produced for the Grand Ball held in the Alexander Hall of the Grand Kremlin Palace, Moscow on 23rd May 1896, during the coronation festivities of Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna, three days before their coronation on 26th May.

Designed by Ernst Karlovich Lipgart (1847-1932) and printed in Moscow by the celebrated A.A. Levenson printing house. The elaborate chromolithograph depicts an Imperial herald on horseback beside the Moskva River, wearing a tabard emblazoned with the Russian Imperial double-headed eagle and raising an eagle-topped staff, with the Kremlin beyond. Lipgart’s signature appears lower right and the Levenson imprint lower left.

The heading reads “Supper / Menu of 23 May 1896”. The Russian menu comprises Lucullus bouillon; assorted pirozhki; cold hazel grouse à la Suvorov; roast large chickens on the spit; salad; whole asparagus; ice cream; and dessert.
