Fine antique and important manuscript dossier of 24 pages dated February1866, comprising copies and extracts of official and semi-official correspondence relating to Norfolk Island, its governance, land tenure, and the welfare of the Pitcairn Island descendants relocated there. The papers centre on communications involving Admiral of the Fleet Sir Charles Fairfax Moresby (1786-1877),, colonial and local authorities, and prominent figures including Sir John Young (Governor of New South Wales), Edward Cardwell (Secretary of State for the Colonies), magistrates of Norfolk Island, and Bishop John Coleridge Patteson of the Melanesian Mission. The document reads as a continuous narrative, with dated letters, formal statements, and copied extracts. Subjects addressed include: land grants and disputed alienation of acreage on Norfolk Island, relations between the Home Government, colonial officials, and island magistrates, the position of the Pitcairn community and their expectations following relocation, missionary activity and the Melanesian Mission, economic management of stock, producer and communal resources, anxieties over governance, authority, and the erosion of guarantees previously given to settlers.
