Bibelot is a late nineteenth century word derived from the French word bel ‘beautiful’, meaning a small item of beauty, curiosity or interest. The word ephemera is derived from the sixteenth century Greek word ephmera meaning a printed or hand written paper not meant to be retained for a long period of time.
Fine antique and charming royal nursery relic comprising a pair of pale silk infant shoes with decorative ribbon rosettes and matching silk knitted socks, preserved as a keepsake from the infancy of Princess Marie of Edinburgh, later Queen Marie of Romania (1875-1938. One shoe bears a handwritten inscription to the sole reading: "Princess Marie's first shoes and socks Peterhoff 3rd August 1876". Marie was approximately nine months old and the inscription records the shoes and socks at the Peterhoff Palace, the celebrated summer residence of her grandfather Tsar Alexander II, during a visit by the Edinburgh family to the Russian Court.
Princess Marie was the daughter of Prince Alfred, second son of Queen Victoria, and Duchess Marie Alexandrovna, daughter of Tsar Alexander II. She would later become Queen of Romania and one of the most celebrated royal figures of the twentieth century, persuading her husband King Ferdinand to come into World War I on the side of the Allies.
