Fine antique signed letter dated 4th October 1938 from Mary, Princess Royal Countess of Harewood (1897-1965), only daughter of King George V and Queen Mary, addressed to her son Gerald, signed "Mummy", written on stationery embossed with 'M' surmounted by a crown for 32 Green St W2, discussing Chamberlain's return from Germany "How thankful one is that agreement was reached at Munich and war prevented - We were issued with gas masks at Harewood on 29th in the house and they had a very full meeting in the school that night when Mr Fitzroy spoke on what to do and other to do in the event of air raid etc etc...Mr F had a quantity of sand against incendiary bombs...I don't know what I shall have done without the wireless, it gave the news so well and at frequent intervals I was thrilled at hearin gMr Chamberlain's arrival at Heston on Sept 30th and especially at 10 Downing Street..." She then goes on to discuss hunting at Rudding Park. From the collection of Gerald David Lascelles (1924-1998) and Angela Lascelles (1919-2007), first wife of the Honourable Gerald Lascelles second son of the 6th Earl of Harewood and his wife the Princess Royal - despite divorcing she remained very close to Queen Elizabeth II and the Royal Family.
