Fine antique signed letter dated 12th June 1941 from Mary, Princess Royal Countess of Harewood (1897-1965), only daughter of King George V and Queen Mary, addressed to her son Gerald, signed "Mummy", written on stationery embossed with 'M' surmounted by a crown for Chesterfield House but crossed out for Harewood, discussing her movements between depots and a trip to Birmingham to visit the JCB Works..chiefly to see the women working here, many thousands are employed and their work is fascinating to watch, then I opened 'Women at War Exhibition' in Lewis...As far as one could tell all the Women's Services of every sort and kind were well represented and it was interesting...and then visits yo Hospitsl Supplies and a Hostel for the Services and canteen, a visit to packing centre Prisoners of War parcels and to see mobile canteens...I was much impressed by all I saw...then visited 2 Red X hospitals." She further gives him a folded letter to give to her other son George (1923-2011) stating she had seen in the Sunday Times that he had been selected to row, signed 'M' in the corner showing it came from her, accompanied by tis original envelope addressed to Gerald at Eton College. From the collection of Gerald David Lascelles (1924-1998) and Angela Lascelles (1919-2007), first wife of the Honourable Gerald Lascelles second son of the 6th Earl of Harewood and his wife the Princess Royal - despite divorcing she remained very close to Queen Elizabeth II and the Royal Family.
