He was Secretary of the Navy under President Grover Cleveland from 1893 to 1897 addressed to John Edward Risley, US Minister to Denmark

"My dear Mr. Minister

I had your letter some time since in which you spoke so kindly of my daughter and mentioned your invitation which she writes me she has accepted. I send by this mail letter to her addressed to your care which please forward if she has left Copenhagen.

You asked that the ships stop at your port — am glad you had them with you. Do not feel that I can order them to stop again as I am anxious to get them home.

Permit me to thank you sincerely for your many kindnesses to Miss Leila which she and I both heartily appreciate. She wrote me very enthusiastically about her trip over &

Very sincerely yours,

H. H. Herbert"
