Fine antique partly printed and manuscript arrest writ, issued by the Switzerland County Circuit Court at Vevay, Indiana 24th November 1829, in the case of The State of Indiana v. Samuel Clarringer, following an "Indictment for Fornication". The writ commands the Sheriff of Switzerland County to take the defendant into custody and bring him before the Circuit Court at Vevay at its following April term to answer the indictment. Signed by Israel R. Whitehead, Clerk of the Circuit Court and a prominent early citizen of Vevay, he married Rachel Lee in 1827. The reverse is extensively docketed in contemporary hands and records the subsequent progress of the case, including the Sheriff stating that the defendant could not be found, together with a later court direction that he be held to bail in the sum of 25USD.
