The word ephemera is derived from the sixteenth century Greek word ephmera meaning a printed or hand written paper not meant to be retained for a long period of time.
Fine and rare antique silk menu, printed in gold and green inks on fine cream silk and bordered with an elaborate trim-colour ring in red, white, and blue, tied at the upper corners with original gilt-three tasselled cords. Issued for the luncheon given by the Corporation of London to mark the formal opening of the new Metropolitan Cattle market (Islington) on 13th June 1885, an event honoured by the attendance of Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, as stated prominently in the title.The upper portion features a large engraved vignette of the City of London arms flanked by allegorical agricultural figures, cattle, and produce - designed and printed by Turner, Pell & Co of Hatton Garden. The Bill of Fare with dishes in English and French. The caterers J & T Staples, Purveyors of Turtle to Her Majesty are credited at the foot and was one of the most famous Victorian taverns specialising in civic banquets. The fringe is in excellent intact condition with strong colours.
