Bibelot is a late nineteenth century word derived from the French word bel ‘beautiful’, meaning a small item of beauty, curiosity or interest. The word ephemera is derived from the sixteenth century Greek word ephmera meaning a printed or hand written paper not meant to be retained for a long period of time.
Fine antique pair of formal documents relating to the marriage of Prince Alfonso de Borbon y Dampierre (193601989), grandson of King Alfonso XIII of Spain, and Maria del Carmen Martinez-Bordiu y Franco (born 1951), granddaughter of General Francisco Franco made by Maison Stern. The first is an impressive large format wedding invitation in Spanish embossed on the cover with the Spanish royal crown, issued jointly by the bride's parents, the Marquess and Marchioness of Villaverde, and the groom's parents, Infante Jaime de Borbon, Duke of Anjou and Segovia, and Emmanuelle de Dampierrre. Embossed with the respective family coats of arms, inviting guests to the ceremony at the Royal Palace of El Pardo, Madrid, on 8th March 1972, followed by a reception.General Franco accompanied his granddaughter to the wedding. It is accompanied by the formal marriage announcement in French, issued by the Duke of Anjou and Segovia bearing the Bourbon royal arms and recording the ceremony conducted by Cardinal Vicente Enrique y Tarancon, Archbishop of Madrid. Maison Stern specialised in engraving letter paper, invitations, announcements, monograms, signet rings, and greeting cards for members of royal families and aristocracy from around the world.
