Bibelot is a late nineteenth century word derived from the French word bel ‘beautiful’, meaning a small item of beauty, curiosity or interest. The word ephemera is derived from the sixteenth century Greek word ephmera meaning a printed or hand written paper not meant to be retained for a long period of time.
Fine antique collection of nineteen different chromolithographic design plates after the medieval 15th century originals held at the Art-Industrial Museum in Moscow, printed in Paris in the late 19th Century as part of a scholarly design series. The plates reproduce ornamental motifs after the originals and feature richly coloured examples of interlaced strap work, stylised foliate forms, geometric knot work and calligraphic motifs, characteristic of medieval Russian manuscript and architectural decoration. Each plate is bilingually titled in Russian and French 'Russian Ornament of the 15th Century'. Lithographed by Ad. Levie, printed by Imp. Lemercier & Cie, Paris, and published by Veuve A. Morel & Cie.
