Fine antique and rare Imperial Russian gold swivel locket/fob, of oval form, mounted with polished black onyx panels and suspended from its original articulated swivel fitting. The obverse is finely engraved with a crowned intertwined cypher centring on the letter 'W", representing the princely Wolkonsky (Volkonsky) family. The reverse bears a crowned heraldic shield engraved with simplified armorial devices derived from the ancient arms of the Princes Wolkonsky. The locket opens to reveal an interior compartment intended for a miniature portrait, photo, lock of hair or other sentimental memento. The quality of the engraving suggest it was commissioned as a personal accessory, likely to be worn on a watch chain or gentleman's locket. The Princes Wolkonsky were among the most distinguished noble families of imperial Russia, tracing their descent to Rurikid princes.
