Fine and unusual evocative Romanov family photo produced by Levitsky of Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaievna of Russia (1819-1876). She was a daughter of Emperor Nicholas I
of Russia, sister of Alexander II and aunt of Alexander III. On the reverse is a contemporary manuscript note in French recording the photograph as a souvenir from Tsar Alexander III and presented to Count Stroganoff:
The Levitsky Studio was located in Moika River Embankment, 30 (1860s), Nevsky Prospect, 28 (1890s), and Kazanskaya Street, 3 (1898, the house is not preserved), it remained in operation until it was closed by the Soviets in 1918.

Following the death of her first husband Maximillian, Duke of Leuchtenberg, in 1853 she contracted a secret morganatic marriage with Count Grigori Alexandrovich Stroganoff (1824-1879) with whom she had two children. This CDV appears to have been given to the Count's father Count Alexander Grigorievich Stroganoff (1795-1891) who was father-in-law to the Grand Duchess sometime between1881 and 1891.
