Bibelot is a late nineteenth century word derived from the French word bel ‘beautiful’, meaning a small item of beauty, curiosity or interest. The word ephemera is derived from the sixteenth century Greek word ephmera meaning a printed or hand written paper not meant to be retained for a long period of time.
This interesting letter has Olga wishing birthday wishes to Siocha "good health for your entire life!...All this time, its been terribly cold - down to 16-18 degrees but with full sunshine, and in the sun the roofs were melting...We had fun after lunch between 1-2 by walking on the frozen sea! How beautiful it was! Closer to the land, there were large chunks of ice forming little islets and small mounds - then a black ice that was completely flat. Many people were skating, but I was afraid for my boys - some skilled people have died under that ice, having gone too far. Since our Christmas, and now its been two weeks since our dear Cossacks of the Cuban were here - they have gone off to Norway. During the month they were here - every day - several of them would come to our home for lunch and stay until it was time to return to the city - precisely at 7 o'clock...such good people, and are deeply missed. They are not like so many others - they remain military brotherhood - entirely loyal - without hidden motives. The children adored them. Yesterday, one of the,, who has asthma and who came came to receive treatment from my uncle Alix (Mecklenburg-Strelitz), at his well provisioned estate nearby in Rostock, came to spend the day with us...Ghoury immediately sat on his lap and kissed him all over again etc. My children seem to charm just about everyone! That same man had been a cavalry officer during the war. God leads the way...and all these poor souls are weary. Thats what became of those dear ones. And now I must leave you, for I'm taking my sons to their English lesson in town - and I still have to feed them. Tikhon eats enormously: we have two cats. There is an exhibition of Russian paintings here - very interesting." She ends "Goodbye, dear Siocha...May God bless you. I embrace you with all my heart, Olga"
