Fine antique and rare Japanese Anglo-British diplomatic black lacquer and paper folding dinner fan menu, produced as the menu and musical programme for an important Anglo-Japanese dinner held in Tokyo on 22nd June 1918, during the official mission to Japan of Prince Arthur Duke of Connaught, representing King George V. The dinner took place four days after his arrival into Japan on 18th June on an important wartime royal and diplomatic mission. He was to present Emperor Taisho with the baton and honorary rank of Field Marshal in the British Army, the visit intended too reinforce relations between Britain and Japan and the Anglo-Japanese Alliance during the First World War.
The black lacquered sticks and guards finely decorated in gold maki-e with flowering plants and bamboo, one guard signed by the Japanese artist with an abbreviated two-character signature, possibly associated with the Miyamoto workshop, suppliers to the Japanese Imperial Court. The paper leaf is decorated with scattered gold and prominently bearing the sixteen- petalled imperial chrysanthemum, emblem of the Japanese Emperor and Imperial House.
One side inscribed 'Le Diner du 22 Juin 1918' beneath the Imperial chrysanthemum and printed in French with an elaborate menu Tortue Claire a la Royale, Filets de Sole a la Cardinal, Poularde a la Vendome, Filet de Boeuf a la Massena, and Bouteille de Champagne en Surprise. The reverse printed with the evening's musical programme including Zehle's Viscount Nelson, Berlioz's Roman Carnival, selections from Kismet, English Beauties and the Mascot, Rachmaninoff's Prelude in C-sharp minor, and concluding significantly with C. Dello Joio's march Alliance.
The date 22nd June 1918 has an additional royal significance as being the seventh anniversary of the Coronation of King George V and Queen Mary which took place on 22nd June 1911. The prominent Imperial chrysanthemum, together with the quality of the signed Japanese lacquerwork and highly formal nature of the dinner suggests that the occasion could be an Imperial Court entertainment.
