Fine antique and rare Japanese black lacquer and gold maki-e box by Miyamoto of Tokyo, made to commemorate the Coronation of King George V and Queen Mary on 22nd June 1911. The box has rounded corners and the cover is decorated with the British Royal Arms, surrounded by the unusual arrangement of the royal and imperial cypher 'R G I', rather than 'GRI' and inscribed 'June 22.1911'. The sidebar finely decorated in the traditional Japanese taste with scrolling foliage in gold lacquer, the box retaining its red silk braided cord and tassel. The underside is signed in gold in Japanese 'Made by Miyamoto'.
The Miyamoto firm of Tokyo was a distinguished maker of luxury wares and a Purveyor to the Japanese imperial Household, producing presentation pieces for the Imperial Court as well as objects intended for diplomatic and foreign royal occasions. These boxes are thought to have been made in order to distribute commemorative medals marking the Coronation of King George V
