Bibelot is a late nineteenth century word derived from the French word bel ‘beautiful’, meaning a small item of beauty, curiosity or interest. The word ephemera is derived from the sixteenth century Greek word ephmera meaning a printed or hand written paper not meant to be retained for a long period of time.
Fine antique set of official documents from Queen Victoria's Customs House dated 12th May 1888 showing how the Customs Department coordinated Queen Victoria's birthday holiday in 1883, with exceptions made for London and Dublin, where the holiday was shifted to 26th May instead of the 24th May. Special care was taken to ensure important communications were handled properly around the holiday.
