Bibelot is a late nineteenth century word derived from the French word bel ‘beautiful’, meaning a small item of beauty, curiosity or interest. The word ephemera is derived from the sixteenth century Greek word ephmera meaning a printed or hand written paper not meant to be retained for a long period of time.
Fine antique royal invitation to the wedding of Prince Henry Duke of Gloucester to Lady Alice Montagu-Scott daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch and Queensbury at Buckingham Palace dated 6th November 1935, embossed in gold with the royal coat of arms. It is accompanied by the Memorandum regarding motor cars, the black crown to be affixed to windscreens, an original photo of the wedding cake and a ticket to attend King George V entertainment in the Royal Mews of Windsor Castle to celebrate the wedding dated 16th November 1935.
It was originally meant to be at Westminster Abbey but later moved to the Private Chapel in Buckingham Palace due to the death of Lady Alice's father so this is the new invitation sent out.
From the collection of Captain Sir Henry Lloyd (1899-1968), and his wife Lady Kathleen daughter of John Gretton who won two gold medals in the 1900 Olympics.
