Rare printed calling card in French for Grand Duke Peter Nikolaevich of Russia (1864-1931), son of Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich the Elder. He married Princess Milicia of Montenegro 

From the collection of Richard and Mary Winslow who had the Villa Winslow in Cannes during the 1890s and were friends with aristocrats and royals from all over the world. Mary was a great beauty and had by family traditon once been a mistress of the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII. 

Richard Winslow (1848-1896), was born in Chicago, his father was Hezekiah and his mother Helen nee Clarke. He died in Cannes.

 

Mary Hulings Denison (1861-1933), was born in Pennsylvania and came from a wealthy family. Her father Charles was a lawyer and member elect of the 38th Congress of the USA. Her mother was Ellen Elizabeth nee Hulings.

 

They married on the Isle of Wight in 1883. Richard lied about his age on the wedding certificate and passed himself off as a younger man by 6yrs!  They had two children who died in infancy.


Cannes became a popular holiday destination with aristocrats from all over the world. The British and Russian particularly enjoyed their times there. Queen Victoria visited in 1890 and Tsar Nicholas II in 1905/6, staying at the Villa du Parc. It was in Cannes in 1898 at the Villa Kasbek that the Prince of Wales met his mistress Mrs Alice Keppell.
